Jurong Bird Park

Everyday when I drive to work I pass by the Jurong Bird Park.  This weekend we finally got the chance to stop in and see what it was all about.  We've seen plenty of birds at the zoo but never a park dedicated to them.

The park was beautiful and very well maintained.  Derek made the comment that much like everything else in Singapore, it was like being at a Disney park.  There is not a shred of trash to be seen, everything is colorful, lush, and perfectly manicured, and it is just a happy place to be.  The park opened 41 years ago but looks like it is just a couple years old.

Entrance to the Bird Park with a few Christmas decorations
We strolled around the park for a couple hours making sure we saw every bird and exhibit.  The park was very large and there wasn't a huge crowd so we would often find ourselves in places by ourselves.
Penguins in Singapore!
Just a few of the hundreds of flamingos
The Shoebill is a very different looking bird
Pelican sitting on a log.  Where did he get the toupee?
Awesome waterfall in the African Aviary
Never been this close to an ostrich before.
They are so big!
He came over to see us. You could feed the ostrich small bananas but he
wasn't really interested in them while we were there.
Into the Lory Loft to feed the Lorys
Derek had one of the Lorys land on him to drink the nectar.
I fed the Lorys too but was so glad one didn't land on me.
Cranes perched about
High Flyers Show
Macaws flying through hoops
The High Flyers show was surprisingly good.  There were all kinds of birds that flew around the amphitheater and were excellently trained.  They had a bird that could speak and sing in three languages!  Unfortunately we think they cut the show short due to the thunder in the distance.  As soon as the show was over we raced to the car to beat the rain.  You can always count on the afternoon rain shower during rainy season!  If the Bird Park was this good, we can't wait to see what the Zoo is like.  Hopefully we can make it there this weekend.
